Eight Belles Finishes Second, Denis of Cork Third
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of horse racing's triple crown. It has been a long time since a horse has won all three legs of the event, but without winning the first, there is no chance.
Big Brown came into the Kentucky Derby as the favorite. It is difficult to be the favorite in this race and come out on top, but that is what Big Brown accomplished.
The horse won the race with a strong finish down the stretch. Big Brown broke from the outside, which makes it difficult to win, but he overcame a slow start, and made up ground on the backstretch.
Eight Belles finished second, and Denis of cork was third. The second choice, Colonel John, did not place in the top three.
Big Brown payed $6.80 for the win. Eight Belles payed $10.6 for second, and Denis of Cork payed $11.60 for his third place finish. Big Brown will now turn towards the other two races to try and complete the triple crown.
Kent Desormeaux was the jockey that guided Big Brown to the victory. He won by four and three quarter lengths.
